“Guilty,” finds Usher pleading his case about why the two split. The single, loosely based on his troubled marriage with his soon to be ex-wife Tameka Raymond, however ballsy, shows the kind of growth the more mature audience fell in love with on Here I Stand, and allows the album to expand beyond a Confessions Pt. “Papers” was released in late 2009, and garnered the dramatic reception that Raymond and the label were hoping for the kind of drama that makes for good stories and even better songs. Raymond picks up where Confessions left off, with intermittent evidence of growth along the way, such as the album’s buzz single “Papers.” In 2010, Usher has gotten rid of the baggage and is back with to his old self, gallivanting about town, seducing women, and topping the charts. While Usher’s fifth studio album Here I Stand may have done well on the charts (largely due to the success of the debut single “Love In This Club,” the general consensus among fans and listeners was that the superstar had lost his edge. His musical style, tone, and content all shifted when he and married stylist and mother of his two children, Tameka Raymond. His most popular album to date, and the second best-selling album of the last decade, the Grammy-award winning Confessions, was birthed from the drama between him and former TLC group member Chili. Those same elements power great albums, just ask Usher. But as a whole, the album is a solid release from a pretty consistent artist… leather capris aside. Unfortunately, there are some skippable tracks, namely “OMG” featuring will.i.am and “More” from the NBA All-Star Game. The album is a decent R&B album representing a more mature and assertive Usher. Usher sat down with Good Morning America to discuss a few things including his new album, his mom, Michael Jackson, and his new life. Venus” is the clearest attempt at what I consider the Usher we know and love. Thankfully Plies does not make the cut for the “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” album version. The standout tracks include the two singles, “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” and “Lil’ Freak” featuring Nicki Minaj. I’m all for multifaceted individuals, but the album feels a bit scattered. Though Here I Stand was considered weak by some people’s standards, I found it presented Usher at a particular point in his life. Usher is trying to get his mojo back with his new album Raymond v.
